I'm Rhyann Bowman. I'm a freshman at UNC Charlotte. This is my e-portfolio for English 1101. Professor Brown has taught us that literacy is about the ability to accomplish a goal. I believe that each student's literacy has improved since the first day of class because of the amount of group work we do. I think that group work is important because while getting to know others, I learned about them and their strengths/weaknesses and we could help one another improve. This term, I have improved as both a person and a student in higher education. As a person, I learned to accept differences among people because you can learn a lot from them. For example, I thought that my roommate was the opposite of me but we have a lot of similarities so judging a book by its cover was not the way to go. As a student in higher education, I've learned how to be independent and responsible because it's a necessity for college life. It has always been a struggle getting up for school but since I started college, I've learned to get myself up to avoid failing and wasting my parents' money. As a person who is on the verge of completing the semester, I've learned how to procrastinate less because finals are the most important part of the semester and that's not the time to procrastinate. I haven't procrastinated lately because even the worst procrastinator knows how much something as important as finals can affect you.
This term has both positive and negative aspects. The positive aspects included meeting new people and some parties. The negative aspects were receiving less-than-satisfactory- grades on my first exams and getting homesick at times. I hope the reader of this reflection learns that there were both good and bad times this semester but overall, I realize that I've had a good experience. My hope for the future is that I continue to work hard and improve as both a student and a person next term.
